Chief Justice Kamanda Chairs ECOWAS Judicial Council Meeting

The first meeting of the ECOWAS Judicial Council to be hosted in Sierra Leone has commenced under the chairmanship of Honourable Chief Justice Komba Kamanda where he received commendations from colleague Chief Justices, eminent judges, and Commissioners of the ECOWAS Commission.
In his opening remarks, the Honourable Chief Justice welcomed delegates and expressed appreciation for their attendance at the statutory meeting, convened pursuant to Rule 6(1) and (2) of the Council’s Governing Rules.
The ECOWAS Judicial Council was established pursuant to Decision A/DEC.2/06/06, adopted by the Authority of Heads of State and Government.
The decision integrated the Council into the ECOWAS institutional structure, ensuring that the appointment of judges transitions from purely political selection to a more merit-based and peer-reviewed process. The meeting will end on Friday 24th April.
PARLIAMENT RATIFIES AFCAC CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT

The Parliament of Sierra Leone has ratified the amendment to Article 10 (4) of the Constitution of the African Civil Aviation Commission (AFCAC), marking a significant step toward strengthening the country’s transportation sector.
The amendment was originally adopted during the 28th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the African Union, held on 31st January 2017 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Presenting the agreement for ratification, the Minister of Transport and Aviation, Fanday Turay, described the move as a major milestone aimed at enhancing Sierra Leone’s transportation infrastructure and aligning it with international standards.
He explained that, the amendment seeks to improve operational efficiency and effectiveness within the aviation sector, while also establishing a specialized agency to support the development of transportation both domestically and internationally.
Contributing to the debate, the Majority Leader and Leader of Government Business, Mathew Sahr Nyuma, emphasized that the ratification would position Sierra Leone to better meet global best practices and accelerate growth in the sector.
He further noted the importance of maintaining quorum in parliamentary proceedings before decisions are taken, as the Minister concluded by thanking Parliament and assuring that more agreements and bills would soon be presented for consideration.
