UN Women Launches 3Rd Generation National Action Plan Today
UN Women Sierra Leone in collaboration with the Ministry of Gender and Children’s Affairs with funds from the Government of the Republic of Ireland through Irish Aid and UN Peacebuilding Fund will hold a National Launch of the Third Generation National Action Plan (SiLNAP) of Sierra Leone on the implementation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security.
Sierra Leone has made tremendous progress in implementing national and international frameworks for women, peace, and security. In 2009, Sierra Leone became the 4th country in West Africa and 7th in Africa to develop a National Action Plan (SiLNAP I) for the full implementation of United Nations Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 1325. The first NAP expired in 2014 and a Second-Generation NAP (SiLNAP II) was adopted in 2019. The Second-Generation NAP (SiLNAP II) expired in December 2023 which gave way to assess its implementation and define priority actions for the development of the Third Generation National Action Plan (SiLNAP III).
The Third Generation National Action Plan (SiLNAP III) is a five (5) years Strategic Plan (2024-2029) that provides a multi-sectoral national framework for the full and effective implementation of the of the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 and instruments that relate to the promotion of the Women, Peace, and Security Agenda in Sierra Leone. This document aligns with existing national and international frameworks on women peace and security (WPS) and seeks to build on progress made during the implementation of SiLNAP II.
The SiLNAP III articulates four (4) strategic objectives that anchored on the 4 Pillars of the UNSCR 1325 (Prevention, Protection, Participation, Relief and Recovery):
• Prevent conflict and all forms of violence against women and girls.
• Increase participation and leadership of women in security sector institutions, political and public offices at national and sub-national levels.
• Protection of women and girls from violence, including sexual and gender-based violence.
• Addressing women and girl’s relief and recovery needs during and post-conflict, natural disasters, outbreaks and epidemics.
