UN Women Honours Peacekeepers With Dignity Kits & Supplies Ahead Of Departure
In a heartfelt ceremony held at the UN Women Sierra Leone Office on Tuesday, departing peacekeepers were honoured with dignity kits and essential supplies as a token of motivation and appreciation as they participate in the African Union Support and Stabilization Stabilization Mission (AUSSOM in Somalia).
The handing over was organized by UN Women in the presence of representatives of the 55 uniformed women who made up more than 34% of the 2025 peacekeepers totally 160 (male and female) departing the country for the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission (AUSSOM) in Somalia. The dignity kits, which included Sanitary Pads, Independence Day Jerseys, Footballs and Volleyballs were donated.
The initiative aimed at promoting the well-being and dignity of peacekeepers, particularly female personnel, by addressing their physical and mental health during the transition period.
Speaking at the handing over ceremony, Setcheme Jeronime Mongbo, UN Women Sierra Leone Head of Office commended the Government of Sierra Leone and the Inspector General of Police for their unwavering commitment to promoting women in peacekeeping.
“I want to commend Mr. William Fayia Sellu, Inspector General of Police for implementing well beyond 30% of women representation in peace missions. This indicates a positive impact from the support provided by the Elsie Initiative Fund.
UN Women look forward to continuous achievements as the Government of Sierra Leone is embarked on the Beijing+30 Action Agenda.” She stated.
Making a statement on behalf of her colleagues, Sergeant Regina Miatta Hamilton recognized the support of UN Women to the Sierra Leone Police over the years. She expressed thanks and appreciation to UN Women and that this gesture will always remind
them to bolster their efforts in peacebuilding.
The ceremony concluded with a group photo, symbolizing unity, and hope for a better Sierra Leone.
