Speaker Decries Negative Portrayal of the Nation

By Desmond Isaac Macauley
The Speaker has strongly condemned the growing trend of citizens portraying the country as a “drug nation,” describing it as an unfair and damaging narrative. He warned that such actions amount to modern day slavery and self-inflicted misinformation and lack of patriotism. According to him, the situation is worsened by the fact that respected citizens and public figures are leading this negative propaganda.
Speaker noted that, politicians and influential individuals are among those tarnishing the country’s image for political gain. He questioned why citizens continue to destroy their own nation rather than promote its progress, urging self-reflection and accountability among leaders and citizens.
The Speaker criticized the tendency to compare the nation negatively with others, arguing that every country faces its share of wrongdoing and criminal elements. He emphasized that such problems are not unique and should not define the nation’s identity or reputation
Highlighting the importance of national development, the Speaker urged citizens to create an environment that attracts investors and fosters job creation. He stressed that continuous negative labelling discourages foreign investment and limits opportunities for growth.
Concluding his remarks, the Speaker cited a writer who once said that when something wrong is happening in a nation, someone must have the courage to speak up before leaving the stage. He called on all citizens, especially leaders, to speak truthfully and act responsibly in the interest of the nation’s future.
