Mother & Daughter Charged With Murder Of Police Superintendent

By Fatmata Mohamed Bangura
Kashapeh Smith and her daughter, Remi Smith, appeared before Magistrate Santigie Bangura in Court No. 2 in Freetown, facing four counts of murder under Section 1 of the Offences Against the Persons Act 1861, as amended by the Abolition of Death Penalty Act 2021 (Act No. 6 of 2022).
The charges allege that Kashapeh Smith murdered Superintendent Arnold Adeyemie Coker on September 2, 2024, at No. 37 Carr Street, Hastings, in the Western Rural Judicial District of Sierra Leone.
The second count involves perverting the course of justice, alleging that Kashapeh Smith, fully aware of the circumstances surrounding Coker’s murder, fabricated evidence with the intent to obstruct justice.
The third count charges Remi Smith with misprision of felony, asserting that she knowingly concealed her mother’s commission of murder between September 1st and September 2nd, 2024, at the same address.
The fourth count also alleges that Remi Smith, aware of the circumstances of Coker’s murder, fabricated evidence to prevent justice from being served.
When the charges were read, neither of the accused entered a plea.
Counsel C. Kargbo and S.L. Lewis represented the defendants, while Counsel D. Wellington requested a short adjournment. Magistrate Santigie Bangura granted the request, scheduling the next hearing for October 31, 2024.
