Lawyer Alfred Kamanda Attends African Presidents’ Bar Summit in Nairobi
The East African country of Kenya, welcomed a number of African Bar Leaders to a two-day Summit held on the 8th and 9th October 2025 at the Day Star University in Nairobi, Kenya. The Summit was organized by the Law Society of Kenya in partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the East African Law Society (EALS) and Day Star University.
The Summit was held under the theme: “Catalysing the Environmental Rule of Law for Environmental Action in the African Region.”
African Bar leaders, Student Leaders, Legal Experts and Environmental experts gathered in Nairobi at this Summit deliberating on solutions that strengthen and consolidate democracy, governance, environmental sustainability across the region and the provision of probono legal services to individuals and communities whose rights and liberties are under threats or being abused and or violated.
Legal practitioners were encouraged to address pressing issues on the Continent such as climate change, gender, public interest litigation to ensure lawyers play a pivotal role in addressing environmental challenges in their communities.
The Summit has created a platform for more collaborations and partnerships across the region. Members shared ideas, good practices and created room for opportunities collaborative work in assimilating environmental considerations in the operations of Bar Associations across the Continent.
Bar Presidents requested for capacity building for their members to be able to engage in actions aimed at empowering communities with the required skills and knowledge to know and defend their rights as well as engaging in public interest litigations for the protection of constitutional rights and liberties of the people. Bar Leaders, committed to collaborating with one another, engaging in more public interest litigations, defending environmental rule of law and constitutional rights of the People.
Alfred Kamanda, who is public Relations of the Sierra Leone Bar Association was in attendance representing Madam Tuma Adama Jabbi, President of the Sierra Leone Bar Association. In his address to Bar Leaders, Alfred Kamanda stated that the Sierra Leone Bar Association is willing and ready to engage in more public interest litigations back home and to collaborate with Bar Leaders as they all fight in making Africa a better place. He also stated that as an Association, they encourage their members to provide Pro Bono Legal Services and to take positive steps in addressing environmental issues.
The Public Relations Officer of the Sierra Leone Bar Association, Alfred Kamanda Esq. stated that Sierra Leone has developed a solid legal framework for environmental protection, particularly through the Environmental Protection Act, 2008, the Forestry Act 1988, the National Protected Area Management and Biodiversity Conservation Act 2012 and the Mines and Minerals Act 2009 to name but a few. There are however, many environmental issues that demand the intervention of legal practitioners to protect the environment and defend their rights in those communities.
