Despite passing eleven (11) out of twenty (20) categories of the recently published Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Scorecard, Sierra Leone performed poorly on the category of Economic Freedom.
The scorecard shows that out of a total number of eight (8) indicators in the category of Economic Freedom, Sierra Leone only managed to pass two (2) of the indicators thereby failing six (6) of them.
The country recorded 34% on the indicator of Fiscal Policy, 47.7% on inflation, 38% on Regulatory Quality, 45% on Trade Policy, 45% on Land Rights and Access, 18% on Access to Credit, 96% on Women in the Economy, and 94% on Employment Opportunity.
Other indicators which the country did not do well on includes: Government Effectiveness with a 38% score, Natural Resource Protection with 30%, and Child Health with 23%.
Economic Freedom is a key eligibility criterion which requires countries to demonstrate a commitment to policies and institutions that promote economic freedom as a pathway to sustainable poverty reduction and economic growth.
According to economic experts and right-thinking Sierra Leoneans, the Economic Freedom indicators on the FY2025 MCC Scorecard reflect the reality which the ordinary Sierra Leonean is contending with.
