GLoPAN Launches Report On Enhancing Nutrition & Building Resilience In Africa’s Food Systems

The Global Panel on Agriculture for Nutrition and Food Systems (GLoPAN) has unveiled a new report focused on enhancing nutrition and building resilience within Africa’s food systems.
The study was spearheaded by Dr. Patrick Kormowa, Director of Food Security and Climate Smart Agriculture at the Presidential Initiative on Climate Change, Renewable Energy and Food Security (PI-CREF), and Prof. Abdulai Jalloh, Chief Agriculturist at the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security. In late 2024, Sierra Leone hosted experts from Malawi, Ethiopia, Ghana, Canada, and the UK, who collaborated over 18 months, funded by the Irish Government, to conduct the research titled Building Resilience in the Transformation of Food Systems in Africa.
This report, developed in partnership with government officials and experts from Malawi, Sierra Leone, and Ethiopia, synthesizes findings from a 15-month study aimed at strengthening the resilience of food systems in these nations. Funded by Irish Aid, the initiative seeks to create realistic and pragmatic strategies to enhance each country’s ability to deliver affordable, sustainable, and healthy diets for all, while ensuring resilience against future challenges. The report also highlights the leadership demonstrated by these countries in the region.
Involving 140 national experts and policymakers, along with international specialists, the report draws on the latest scientific evidence. It identifies critical gaps between achievable goals and necessary actions, outlining priorities for future initiatives. While primarily targeting government stakeholders, the report also offers significant recommendations for international organizations focused on finance, trade, and development, as well as for the donor community, researchers, and the private sector.
As a follow-up to the report’s findings, PI-CREF will collaborate with stakeholders to conduct a national launch in Sierra Leone before the end of the first quarter of 2025. This national launch will outline and highlight follow-up actions and programs aimed at strengthening food systems transformation, in support of His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio’s #FeedSalone initiative implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (MAFS).
