Ayo Johnson, a 61-year-old man, has made his first appearance before Magistrate Augustine Brima Samura at the Pademba Road Magistrate Court No. 8 in Freetown, facing charges of cyber stalking and cyber bullying, contrary to Section 44(1)(b) of the Cyber Crime Act 2021 (Act No. 7 of 2021).
According to the charge sheet, on Friday, 26th July 2024, in Freetown, the accused allegedly used his Facebook account to publish series of bullying messages directed at Jonathan Thomas Beach of No. 4 Community Road, Allen Town. The prosecution alleges that the posts were made with the intent to harass, intimidate, and cause emotional distress to the complainant. Authorities further stated that the content of the posts was likely to affect Mr. Beach’s physical and emotional well-being.
Under Sierra Leone’s Cyber Crime Act 2021, cyber stalking and cyber bullying are recognized as serious offenses. The law criminalizes the use of digital platforms or computer systems to threaten, harass, or cause distress to others. Section 44(1)(b) specifically holds that any individual who uses a computer system or network to inflict harm or distress on another person commits an offense and may be prosecuted.
During court proceedings, the matter could not proceed as the accused failed to appear. Magistrate Samura subsequently adjourned the case and instructed the police to ensure that Ayo Johnson is produced on the next adjourned date. The case has been rescheduled for Wednesday, 5th November 2025, for further hearing.
The prosecution, led by A.S.P. Barrie, informed the court that investigations into the alleged social media posts and their impact on the complainant are ongoing. The court also underscored the importance of safeguarding the complainant’s safety and well-being as the case continues.
