Just last week when the Sierra Leone People Party (SLPP) led Government of Julius Maada Bio increased the wages of health workers to fight the COVID 19, the government has effected the 30% increment of salary to teachers.

This was made known by a public release this past Friday 24 April . According to the release the increment is in line with the Budget presented by the Minister of Finance in November 2019 in which the Minister of Finance is being quoted to have said, “following the improvement in the conditions of service of health care workers in 2019, teachers salaries are increased by 30% to support human capital development effective April 2020.”

That in fulfilment of that commitment, the Ministry of Finance has started making full payment of the 30% increment of salary increase for 34,5000.

“The increase which is about Le13.44 billion will result to the monthly teacher payroll increase from 42.95 Billion in March 2020 to 56.40 Billion in April 2020. Therefore, the annual teacher wage bill will now increase from Le476.16 billion in 2019 to Le636.62 billion in 2020 including additional cost of new teachers brought on the pay roll,” the release explained.

That despite the difficult economic environment as a result of the global pandemic outbreak of the COVID 19 pandemic, Government reiterates it commitment to delivering quality services within available scarce resource.

Meanwhile, there is mixed feeling among teacher as some are happy with the increment others are of the view that the increment is a paltry sum of Le 280,000 which is more or less meaningless owing to the current economic hardship.
