Reports reaching NEW AGE revealed that following a meeting at State Lodge with both the Board and the Minister of Information and Communication, Mohamed Rahman Swaray, President Bio is poised to clear the mess at National Telecommunication Commission (NATCOM).
That since the appointments of Maxwell Hinga Massaquoi and Daniel Kaitibie as DG and DDG respectively at NATCOM around mid 2018, the institution has been plunged into an unprecedented administrative conundrum that has now attracted the determination of HE Dr Julius Maada Bio to correct.
Rather than embarking on a prudent regulatory path, the two appointed by HE under Executive Authority rather than due process of open competition have been consistently flouting laid out administrative processes and procedures ranging from bloated expenditure, to crooked procurement procedures, illegal termination and intimidation of staff and illegal recruitment without recourse to the Board.
In December 2018, the DG and DDG single handedly increased salaries by 75percent and recruited more than double employees sacked which automatically bloated the payroll to the extent that they were not able to pay salaries of Deputy Directors, Directors and Commissioners for Christmas.
That the mid-month allowances for the DG and DDG was increased from Le 4 million to Le 15 million respectively.
“This is rip-off of public funds” retorted an insider who refused to be named for obvious reasons.
Matters came to the fore when the Board and the Minister of Information last Monday 30 December 2019 went to brief the President at his State Lodge on the messy state of affairs at NATCOM.
So disappointed and angry, President Bio reportedly vowed to clear the mess in the shortest possible time, sources stated.
Meanwhile, DG Maxwell Massaquoi is on suspension by the Board. With this latest development, the chances of coming back are blurred and the likelihood of removing Acting Deputy Director General, Kaitibie abound.
“NATCOM needs a new direction” says a confidential source.
