The Sierra Leone Police (SLP) has been put on the spotlight again on allegations of highhandedness as exhibited by one of their Patrol Teams at the Mortem Community along the Regent Grafton Highway.
This alleged unprofessional conduct of the police is not unconnected to the Friday 10th July 2020 armed robbery attack at the Mortem Community around 4:30 to 5:00 in the morning.
Eyewitnesses account revealed that at around the time mentioned above, they woke up to attack by armed robbers who broke into a pharmacy in the community and were about to break into a building material shop.
That they tried calling police officers stationed at the Mountain Division of the Sierra Leone Police (SLP) to alert them on the unfortunate incident but proved fruitless.
That they came out in numbers and mounted a checkpoint in order to crosscheck vehicles passing by so as to apprehend the armed robbers who had already left their blood stain on the building material shop while trying to open it.
That about Fifteen (15) minutes after they had mounted the checkpoint, the Patrol Team van of the SLP arrived and opened firing on harmless civilians who were trying to do the right thing.
That Two (2) people were fired and one stabbed adding that of the two people fired, a woman was fired in her waist and a man fired in his foot.
That even though the victims and other people identified the police officer who shot at them, that nothing has been done by the police to give justice to the victims.
They also maintained that the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Elizabeth Turay came to the community and only pleaded and sympathized with them for the unlawful conduct of the police.
Efforts made by New Age to reach the police proved fruitless as the Head of Police Media, Supt. Brima Kamara was called and requested to be called later at 3:00 pm; he was called around 3 pm and did not respond.
