Jacob Jusu Saffa, Finance Minister said that inflation which declined to 13% in 2018 increased to 15.9% in March but moderated to 14.4% in June 2020.

He made this statement in his supplementary budget when talking about the impact of COVID-19 on the economy of Sierra Leone.

The national year-on-year inflation for June 2020 is 14.36 percent, which indicates a downward trend compared to 15.47 percent in May 2020, says Statistics Sierra Leone in their regular National Consumer Price Index.

The National Consumer Price Index added that Northern region shows an upward trend from 9.70 percent in May 2020 to 11.12 percent in June 2020 while on the other hand, the other three regions declined: Western Area from 20.00 percent in May 2020 to 17.29 percent in June 2020, Southern region from 14.59 percent in May 2020 to 13.54 percent in June 2020 and Eastern region from 13.22 percent in May 2020 to 12.32 percent in June 2020.

That food and non-alcoholic beverages increased from 16.60 percent in May 2020 to 16.94 percent in June 2020 and that acoholic beverages, tobacco and narcotics increased from 4.44 percent in May 2020 to 5.83 percent in June 2020.

That clothing and footwear declined by 0.43 percentage points from 8.29 percent in May 2020 to 7.86 percent in June 2020  while housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels increased from 5.69 percent in May 2020 to 5.83 percent in June 2020.

The report highlighted that furniture, household equipment and household maintenance declined by 1.46 percentage point from 0.28 percent in May 2020 to -1.18 percent in June 2020 and that health declined by 11.83 percentage points from 33.61 percent in May 2020 to 21.78 percent in June 2020 while transport increased from 11.86 percent in May 2020 to 15.00 percent in June 2020.

That Communication increased from -1.30 percent in May 2020 to -1.29 percent in June 2020, recreation and culture also increased from 2.90 percent in May 2020 to 5.94 percent in June 2020.

That education increased from 53.41 percent in May 2020 to 68.67 percent in June 2020  and that restaurant and hotels increased from 27.90 percent in May 2020 to 28.65 percent in June 2020.
