Some philanthropists from the China Green and Agricultural Group and other volunteers have donated rice to victims of the August 14th mudslide and flooding at Mortemeh- Regent Village.
The donation which took place over the weekend at the village that saw the distribution of 3 metric tons of rice to pregnant women, lactating mothers, physically challenged, children, aged and young men and women.
Speaking through an interpreter during the ceremony, Chairman of Chinese Community in Sierra Leone, Mr. Li, said as a group involved in rice cultivation, they together with other philanthropists decided to support the affected victims with rice to help ameliorate their suffering at this time of the raining season.
He disclosed that every two weeks they go out to different vulnerable communities including Aberdeen, Lumley, Goderich, Kroo Bay and other slums as far as Calaba Town and Waterloo to donate rice as their own support to such deprived communities.
He said they have been able to be successfully doing so with the help of local chiefs at those communities who identify beneficiaries and organize the distribution process.
Among the aims of their exercise, he said is to show and spread love to deprived people living within those communities, adding that as requested by the Chief, with time they are planning to as well be donating bags and shoes to school pupils.
Village Head Woman, Elenorah Tokomi Metzger, in her remarks, on behalf of her people, thanked the Group for remembering them, adding it is just the beginning as more support is expected.
She said the donation came as no surprise to her, because according to her, the plea she made for help during the memorial and thanksgiving service for victims of the August 14th disaster has started attracting response from humanitarian organizations.
