The just revised Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP) Constitution has been considered by many likeminded Sierra Leoneans as a move which has succeeded in killing internal democracy within the party.

By the revised constitution, President Bio is now the Leader of the party and the Vice-President, Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh as the Deputy Leader of the party, which automatically gives President Bio supervisory functions on all members of the party.

That by the functions of Management Theories, when performing supervisory functions, one has the powers to hire and fire as his or her mandates, which gives President Bio such powers as the Leader of the SLPP.

“The new constitution of the SLPP has duly approved His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio as the Leader of the party, and Vice President Dr. Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh as Deputy Leader,” SLPP maintained in their press statement.

Many people have expressed that the reviewed constitution was not only serving as checks and balances on the leader of the party but also on the entire membership of the SLPP before the review.

That the idea behind the review of the 1995 SLPP Constitution was to ensure that democracy is highly maintained and also making sure that the party is powerful than any individual within the party.

That the making of President Bio as the Leader of the SLPP gives him the ultimate power that could stop potential presidential aspirants who may want to challenge the president for the next flagbearer of the party.

This is not unconnected to a statement by the Secretary General of the SLPP, Umaru Napoleon Koroma that adopting the revised constitution makes President Bio the undisputed flagbearer of the party for the 2023 elections.

A major concern expressed by the people is that the reviewed constitution is a retrogressive move, as the same reason for which the 1995 SLPP Constitution was reviewed in late 2008 has been legitimized again.
