As the cost of basic commodities has gone up, the Electricity Distribution and Supply Authority (EDSA) together with the Electricity and Water Regulatory Commission (EWRC) has decided to the increase the electricity charges in the country
EDSA explained to some section of the press that an application for tariff was made to EWRC and that as a result of that, the tariff review was approved.
The approved reviewed tariff will start on the 1st of December 2019.
The reason they gave for the sudden increment is forex volatility and the fact that they are running a loss from purchasing power from a Turkey Power Producer Karpower at Le 1,575 and selling Le 1,335.
Delay in the payment of post-paid by MDAs and illegal abstraction of electricity are also affecting the financial potency of the company.
“The issue of tariff is of public concern but EDSA cannot survive in this kind of business,” they added.
However Sierra Leoneans have rejected the tariff increment, stating that it will definitely increase the cost of living which is already high.
That this is more pressure on them owing to the fact that the hardship in the country is very terrible.
