FREETOWN TREMORS: Is SierraLeone prepared for a major earthquake?

By Desmond Isaac Macauley

The National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) has confirmed receiving reports of tremors in several locations across Freetown at approximately 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, 13 October 2026. The incident has raised concerns about Sierra Leone’s preparedness to respond to a major earthquake or other natural disaster should one occur.

Following the reports, the NDMA engaged the Sierra Leone Institution of Geoscientists (SLIG) to investigate the possible cause. Preliminary information from international seismic monitoring sources indicated significant earthquake activity along the central Mid Atlantic Ridge, including earthquakes measuring 6.7 and 6.8 in magnitude.

Although the timing of the reported offshore earthquake closely coincided with the tremors experienced in Freetown, authorities said further scientific investigation was necessary to establish whether the two incidents were connected.

The NDMA, SLIG and the Ministry of Works and Public Assets have established a Technical Working Group to investigate the incident and recommend appropriate measures. A joint assessment team also visited several locations, including Africell’s head office in Wilberforce, Youyi Building, the Independent Media Commission’s offices, Aureol Insurance Company and the Ministry of Gender and Children’s Affairs.

The initial assessment found no evidence of major structural damage, significant property destruction or fatalities at the locations visited. However, reports that residents in other parts of Freetown also experienced tremors have highlighted the need for stronger public awareness, effective emergency response systems and assessments of the safety of buildings across the capital.

While the NDMA has urged the public to remain calm and report further tremors or structural concerns through its toll free emergency line, 1199, an important question remains. If Sierra Leone were to experience a major earthquake, is the country adequately prepared to protect lives, secure buildings and respond effectively to the disaster?
