SIERRA LEONE CONDEMNS HOUTHI ATTACKS ON SAUDI ARABIA
The Government of Sierra Leone has strongly condemned the Houthi militia’s repeated attacks on the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The attacks have hit civilian areas and critical energy infrastructure.
In a statement issued in Freetown this past Saturday 10 October, the government stood with the Government and people of Saudi Arabia.
It also sent its sympathies to everyone affected by the attacks.
The government said the targeting of oil and energy facilities, airports, civilian infrastructure and other key installations is “a serious threat to regional peace and stability.”
It warned that such actions could disrupt global energy supplies, trade and the free movement of ships along the major sea routes that link the Red Sea, the Gulf and the wider world economy.
Sierra Leone alsp called on the Houthis to stop attacking Saudi Arabia immediately, avoid further escalation and respect international law.
It also urged everyone involved in the Yemen conflict and the wider regional crisis to show maximum restraint and turn to dialogue and diplomacy.
The government restated its commitment to the United Nations Charter, to national sovereignty and territorial integrity, and to settling disputes peacefully.
It stressed that civilians and civilian infrastructure must be protected, adding that all parties to armed conflict must obey international humanitarian law.
The statement drew particular attention to the Red Sea and the Bab al-Mandab Strait, noting that continued escalation in these waterways threatens regional peace, international trade and maritime security.
“ It also threatens the economies of developing countries, which rely on stable global supply routes,” Sierra Leone maintained
Sierra Leone describes itself as committed to multilateralism and international peace and security.
The government said it backs the work of the United Nations and its Special Envoy for Yemen toward a comprehensive, inclusive political settlement that is “Yemen-led and Yemen-owned.”
The government said it is ready to support efforts toward de-escalation, dialogue, regional stability and a lasting peace in Yemen. It would do so through the United Nations and other appropriate multilateral channels.
