Parliament has ratified several major financing agreements between the Government of Sierra Leone and the Islamic Development Bank, aimed at advancing road reconstruction and strengthening the livestock sector. The agreements cover the Kambia-Tomparie, Kamakwie Road Project, and the Livestock and Livelihoods Development Programme.
Presenting the agreements, Minister of Finance Sheku Ahmed Fantamadi Bangura emphasized that the projects are designed to improve market access in the North Western Region while enhancing agricultural productivity nationwide. He highlighted that, the road project will open major transport corridors, while the livestock programme aligns with the government’s Feed Salone Initiative.
He explained that, the livestock programme will target 62,000 households and introduce modern approaches to livestock development. He assured Parliament that access to finance would be provided and closely monitored to ensure the success of the initiative and its impact on rural communities.
He furthered that, the combined agreements reflect government’s commitment to reducing food importation through increased local production. He stressed that the road reconstruction is crucial for trade flow, rural development, and long-term economic growth.
Throughout the debate, Members of Parliament commended the Minister for securing the financing, praising his leadership in reviving the long delayed Kamakwie Road project and advancing agricultural support for farmers.
Closing the session, MPs from both sides of the aisle reaffirmed support for the minister’s efforts, emphasizing effective implementation and oversight. They acknowledged the agreements as a major step toward transforming Sierra Leone’s infrastructure and agricultural sectors under Minister Fantamadi Bangura’s stewardship.
