Information shared by the Freetown City Council (FCC) after its Town Hall Meeting which was attended by over 500 people indicates that dividing Freetown can create a negative impact as against anything positive.
The Mayor of Freetown Her Worship Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr stated that the purpose of the Town Hall Meeting by the Freetown City Council (FCC) was to give the people of Freetown the opportunity to engage, deliberate and raise concerns on the proposed division of the city.
One of the participants in the Town Hall Meeting energetically affirmed that by splitting the city, it is like creating a division wherein those who are rich can be living in one part and those who are poor living in the other part of the city.
She noted that such a division can create problem, adding that there are areas which are dominated by a particular ethnic group and that other areas maybe tempted to say that it is only this tribe that is considered in terms of development say for example if the particular area has the financial muscle to get certain things for themselves.
The Mayor stated that the City of Freetown is only 82.4 Square Kilometers and emphasized that the City is very small in size. She said that Sierra Leone is 74000 Square Kilometers and that Freetown only accounts for 0.1% of the size of Sierra Leone.
She maintained that dividing the city will only make things difficult; therefore, collaboration and coordination is the way forward to make Freetown great.
