Opposition MPs have officially confirmed that, the Clerk of Parliament has been directed to proceed on leave effective 20th June 2025. This development follows weeks of tension over what the opposition described as serious breaches of constitutional order and institutional procedures.
In a public statement, Hon. Ibrahim Barrie from Bombali District reaffirmed his party’s unwavering commitment to defending the Constitution and maintaining the integrity of Parliament. He declared that the opposition will now resume full participation in parliamentary proceedings in the interest of the people of Sierra Leone.
In a corresponding letter, Speaker of Parliament, Hon. Segepoh Solomon Thomas, acknowledged receipt of Hon. Kargbo’s letter dated 5th May 2025 and referenced his response on the 11th May 2025 regarding concerns over the Clerk’s continued stay in office. The Speaker stated that, as promised, he had formally engaged President Julius Maada Bio on the matter. He further announced that the President has since directed the Clerk to proceed on leave, pending a decision on the future of the Office of the Clerk of Parliament.
The Speaker, in his letter, expressed hope that this resolution would allow the Opposition to fully reintegrate into parliamentary work. He urged Hon. Kargbo and his colleagues to resume their legislative responsibilities in service of the people and to support the smooth functioning of Parliament
With the opposition’s return and the Clerk’s removal from active duty, parliamentary proceedings are expected to regain their full momentum. This marks a critical milestone in parliamentary accountability.
