The Council of Churches in Sierra Leone (CCSL) has called on government to speedily and thoroughly investigate all those who are involved in the trafficking of cocaine in and out of Sierra Leone.
This was made known by the Council on Wednesday 22nd January 2025 noting that they are greatly concerned with the recent incident of the discovery of suitcases of cocaine in one of the vehicles of the Sierra Leone Embassy in neighbouring Guinea.
The Council referenced that in April of 2024, they made a desperate call to His Excellency, President Julius Maada Bio and the government to address the issue of drugs that are ravaging the nation equally called on appropriate authorities to go after all those who are involved in destroying young people and moral fabric of the country.
They noted that they were grateful that in that very month of April, His Excellency the President declared drug abuse as a national emergency.
“Currently we are faced with a more serious and desperate situation, which requires urgent and drastic measures,” CCSL stated.
They maintained that they do not want the country to be identified as a transit hub for drugs with cartels that have the capacity to destabilise the nation and contribute to conflict.
They warned that cocaine use and trafficking destroy lives, breed violence and hinder the development of communities.
The Council assured that they are committed to support and join government and well-meaning institutions to fight this negative course.
