NaCSA To Support 15,000 Extreme-Poor Households
The National Commission for social Action (NaCSA) has informed the press that it will support 15,000 extreme-poor households with unconditional cash transfer and cash grant to 400 communities at district level.
The objective of the project is to provide quarterly cash transfer to extreme-poor households across 16 districts in Sierra Leone. This is the continuation of the cash transfer under the Social Safety Net
The event took place at the Commission’s head Office on 8th July 2024.
In his statement, the Commissioner of the National Commission for Social Action (NaCSA), Ambassador Ernest Ndomahina said that the project aimed at promoting financial inclusion which is a cash transfer to vulnerable homes, marginalized groups and people living with disability. He continued that the commission has been supporting the National Disaster Management Agency during the raining season. He disclosed that the project is an unconditional cash transfer and cash grant to 6,000 households in five Districts which includes Falaba, Karene, Western Area Rural, Pujehun, and Kenema District.
He said that the institution will provide 200 USD as cash grant to entrepreneurs in order to help support businesses in those communities adding that this will help boost local businesses.
He urged beneficiaries to take advantage of the opportunity in alleviating poverty in their communities.
He said this intervention will start on July 10th and end on August 4th 2024. He mentioned that the project is supported by the World Bank adding that this will promote generation among vulnerable and people living with disability.
Speaking at the event, the Director of Social Protection, Idris Turay said that the institution is community oriented and always seek the interest of community people. He mentioned that the Productive Social Safety Net and Youth Employment will target 15,000 households and that 8,000 is their current focus. He stated that the project will be targeting the extreme poor in order to help them access basic needs noting that this will help them to live better life. He maintained that among the extreme-poor households, the project will prioritize female beneficiaries and transfer recipients and ensures that at least 30% are persons living with disability. He Furthered that the districts were selected based on the poverty map provided by Statistics Sierra Leone. “We used extensive support from Statistics Sierra Leone, and we have also validated the communities in order to ensure correctness of the process,’’ he said.
He continued that the project will provide temporary employment for youths aged 18-35 in rural and urban areas adding that it will also support skills training for the youths in those targeted communities. He mentioned that this will encourage participation from persons with disabilities through outreach and selection activities in those communities.
