Jacob Jusu Saffa, Finance Minister told Parliament and by extension the people of Sierra Leone that the government of President Bio will procure 50 school buses for the school going children before school resumes.
He made this statement while reading the Supplementary budget on July 13 in the well of Parliament.
According to the Minister, the provision of 50 school buses for the children will mitigate the impact of the fuel price liberalization on the people.
“Mindful of the social impact of this policy on the poor and vulnerable in our society, Government is proposing additional mitigating measures. These include provision of school buses, conditional cash transfers for education, tuition fee subsidy for university students, payment for university application forms, introduction of a student loan scheme and an Adult Literacy Programme,” Minister Saffa stated.
He explained that an amount of Le12.0 billion has been provided as advance payment for the procurement of fifty (50) school buses to be managed by the City Councils on a cost recovery basis.
“The objective is to reduce the cost of transportation for school children while ensuring that they are regular and punctual in schools,” Saffa maintained.
The minister spoke in parliament as if they had already made a partial payment for the 50 buses and will start operation as school re-opens so that parent won’t be worried about giving an extra transport fares.
School Children waiting for transport as school re-opens at major junctions in Freetown have said that they are yet to see any school bus that will solve the problems of transportation.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Transport Kabinneh Kallon and the Executive Chairman of National Privatization Commission, Umaru Napoleon Koroma have assured Sierra Leoneans of a company that will come with over 200 buses to ameliorate the transportation problems of the people.
